J774.1 cells were exposed to F at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mM to determine cell viability. The cells were also exposed to F at 0, 10, 100 mu M, and 1.0 mM and activated by lipopolysaccharide to evaluate the mRNA expression of the cytokines TNF alpha and IL-1 beta by RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) analyses and cytokine levels in the supernatant by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Cell magnetometry was performed on the cells exposed to F at 0, 10, 100 mu M, 1.0 mM, and 2.0 mM to evaluate the effects on F on the cytoskeletal function. The cell viability significantly decreased at 2.0 mM compared to the control. The mean value of TNF alpha in the supernatant of the 1.0 mM group was significantly lower than in the control, but there were no significant differences among the groups in cell magnetometry.
