Students in the Department of Social Work learn to scientifically analyze social issues, support individuals, and help build a better society from a perspective rooted in respect for basic human rights and dignity. Our graduates are able to contribute in many ways to the building creation of communities where all individuals can enjoy secure and meaningful lives. Department of Social Work Key Features of the Department of Sociology Program Structure Topics Admission Policy Key Features of the Department of Social Work   Point 01 Departmental education with a history and tradition Social welfare studies is an academic field that pursues the happiness and well-being of people and society. Learning about social welfare is useful in many settings and enriches society and the people involved, not to mention ourselves. Our Department has a long history and tradition and has produced many researchers and practitioners throughout Japan, something we reflect in our current education. Point 02 Specialized education through two courses Our Social-work Course is available for students aiming to obtain national licensure as a social worker or mental health worker, allowing them to become professional social workers. Alternatively, students can obtain teaching licensure for special-needs schools or general junior and senior high schools, receiving specialized education in our Welfare Development Course, which trains students to become experts in social welfare by cultivating human resources who can be active in various settings in Japan and abroad. Students can choose which course they will join after admission to the University. Point 03 Experience-based classes in small groups A faculty with a wealth of knowledge and experience will support your learning. From admission until graduation, our students can enroll in small-group exercises. Our students also participate in a wide range of hands-on classes, including fieldwork and practical training. Point 04 Opportunities for employment along diversified career paths There are many fields needing human resources with an eye for people and society and a wealth of experience, and employment opportunities for such people are numerous. Career paths are diverse, including public service, teaching, welfare and medical institutions, and general business. Program Structure From their first year, our students learn how to read academic literature and make small-group presentations, deepening their understanding of welfare by focusing on real-world social problems. In the second year, students choose between our Social-work Course and our Welfare Development Course, which will direct them to their future. In their third and fourth years, our students deepen their specialized studies through exercises and practical training, with an eye to their career plans after graduation. Topics Internship Students will participate in internships at companies that focus on employing people with disabilities or NPOs and social enterprises that address social problems, researching and reporting on initiatives they learned about in the field. Students will hone practical skills for contributing to the multicultural society of the future. International Welfare Theory1, 2 Our International Welfare Theory 1 course focuses on Europe, while International Welfare Theory 2 focuses on developing countries and foreigners living in Japan. In both, students learn about social welfare and multicultural society to acquire “glocal” knowledge and perspectives.
